spacer Before and after views of a hypothetical street showing the effects of a traffic circle. In the BEFORE photo on the left the street is wide open, giving the motorist the message that it is OK to go fast through here. In the AFTER photo on the right, a small traffic circle keeps the street from looking as long and straight to the driver.

TRAFFIC CALMING PROJECT

The City of Fairbanks is planning to install traffic calming measures in Hamilton Acres and Shannon Park subdivisions during the 2010 construction season. The purpose of the project is to slow traffic to increase safety for children and pedestrians in response to concerns raised by the subdivisions' residents. The proposed traffic calming measures would include installation of speed humps throughout each subdivision, and construction of traffic circles at certain intersections.

Included below are plan views of each subdivision showing the proposed locations of the speed humps and traffic circles, as well as typical details for each device.
